Keena calls for Custume Barracks Museum to be made open to public

Fianna Fáil Councillor Frankie Keena has called on the Athlone Municipal District to write to the Department of Defence requesting that the planned Military Museum at Custume Barracks be made open to the public for a number of days every week.

Councillor Keena said: “It is always a great pleasure for me to go into Custume Barracks. I would like to compliment them on their initiative in undertaking this project. There will be material from Mullingar and a section on the history of Athlone. Custume Barracks provides huge employment to the local area.

“It is a fantastic facility and it would be nice to have it open to the general public.”

Independent Councillor Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran echoed Cllr Keena’s comments, saying: “This is a very worthy motion. We are all aware of the connection of the Army lads with Athlone. It is important to show it off because it can be a fantastic attraction.”
