Signage to be erected on Greenway within the next two weeks

Athlone director of services, Barry Kehoe, informed councillors at this week’s Municipal District meeting that signage advertising locations along the Greenway will be in place within the next two weeks.

The motion to erect signage welcoming those using the Greenway to each village and town along the route was raised by Fine Gael’s John Dolan. Councillor Dolan said: “I have had a number of presentations from places along the cycleway. It is very important for the tourist season that we have signage.

“It offers an opportunity to promote what amenities are available in that area, not to promote individual businesses but the area as a whole.” Director of services Barry Kehoe assured Councillor Dolan that erecting signage is a priority and that certain signs are already in the council’s possession.

“We have bought signs consisting of directional signage telling people where they are and how far they are from places, as well as signs telling people where refreshments are available.” Mr Kehoe said that the next level of signage to be ordered will take things a step further by informing tourists and users of the Greenway of the kinds of businesses on offer in each locality.

The next step after that will be to place directional signage on main and secondary roads directing people to the Greenway itself.
