An Taoiseach visits Buccaneers Rugby Club

Following the official opening of the new Mullingar to Athlone cycleway last Sunday, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny joined local TD Gabrielle McFadden in heading to The Bounty at Dubarry Park to watch Ireland’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final match against Argentina.

An Taoiseach was part of a bumper crowd that provided an electric atmosphere for the duration of a gripping encounter. After the game he took time to talk to many of the people in attendance, including Billy and Bridie Henshaw, proud grandparents of Ireland centre Robbie whose home club Buccaneers play at Dubarry Park.

To mark An Taoiseach’s first visit there, Buccaneers president Joe Browne presented him with a club tie. Another club stalwart, Pat Hynes, presented him with a Buccs jacket which Mr Kenny said he would proudly wear next month when participating in a sponsored fundraising cycle along the new cycleway in aid of Motor Neurone Research.

Buccaneers RFC thanked both Mr Kenny and Ms McFadden for supporting the club, to whom a Sports Capital Programme grant of €50,000 was recently awarded.
