Athlone Scouts were out and about recently in the air and on the water in worthy challenges and making a name for themselves.
Alex O’Donohoe, who only this month came up from Cubs and joined the Scout troop, took to the water to join the Liffey descent in a kayak, finishing second in the under 14 fibreglass kayak category.
The Liffey descent is an annual event for kayaking fanatics and it was great to see Alex do so well, earning a silver medal for his efforts. To add to that, two Venture Scouts, Niamh Dennehy and Caoimhe Mannion, took part in a tandem parachute jump at Abbeyshrule Airfield in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital, raising a staggering €800 for the charity.
The two girls were on annual camp with other Venture Scouts in Boyle when the date for the jump was confirmed and had to leave at 5.30am to get to Abbeyshrule on time. They were both delighted with their efforts but have sworn to keep their feet on the ground in future. All Scout leaders are delighted with and proud of the efforts the young members have undertaken for worthy causes.
