Applied anatomy for the artist with Mel French

Athlone Arts and Tourism is delighted to announce a life drawing workshop with current Luan Gallery exhibiting artist Mel French.

Differing from previous practice life drawing sessions held in Abbey Road, this will be a tutored workshop led by Mel. Running from 10am to 5pm, participants will examine a life model and learn the basics of anatomical drawing.

Facilitator Mel French says: “It is intended that workshop participants will maintain their own style of drawing and will be given basic tools and tips to apply anatomical knowledge in order to build upon and develop how they approach their work.”

Aedìn McGinn, assistant manager, says: “This is a wonderful opportunity for artists, amateurs and students of all levels to get immersed in the practice of life drawing. Mel French is an extremely skilled sculptor and her application of anatomical knowledge in her 3d forms is what really sets them apart. This is a great opportunity to learn from a very technically accomplished artist and is one not to be missed.”

Mel French is a sculptor based in Westmeath. She gained a first Class degree from NCAD in 1997 and a Cum Laude masters in figurative sculpture from The New York Academy of Art in 2001. French’s work uses elements of the human form, often distorted or created as a hybrid, to explore issues pertaining to the human condition and psyche. She currently has her first solo exhibition, ‘Between a Rock and a Hard Place,’ at Luan Gallery until October 30.

This course is limited to 10 places and pre booking is essential. Visit www.athloneartsandtourism.ie/luangallery for more information.
