Members of the Athlone Probus Group revealed a new plaque at the Shamrock Lodge Hotel on September 7 to mark the group’s continued association with the establishment.
Probus is an association of retired and semi-retired professional and business personnel in autonomous localised clubs throughout Ireland. Retirement can come too early for many people who want and are able to remain active. Probus clubs are organisations for men and women who have retired from their profession or business and want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. The club meets once a week for fellowship and to hear guest speakers.
The Athlone Probus group club was officially formed in 1994. Today, the group consists of 33 members who meet every Monday at The Shamrock Lodge Hotel. The group arrange a variety of entertaining and educational activities including lectures and outings, while members also discuss the main events of the week.
Members go to considerable lengths to have discussions weekly which always result in humorous and enlightened talks. Guest speakers are frequently invited to talk about areas of interest. A lot of members are not from Athlone but have settled in the area, so there is great discussion when the GAA season is in full swing.
The Shamrock Lodge is very welcoming and Probus members would like to extend their thanks to all the management and staff there.
