After a 20-year hiatus the Athlone River Festival and Food Village is back with a bang with a packed programme of more than 50 events to enjoy with family and friends.
From dramatic sky-dive displays and inspiring cookery demos to action-packed kids athletics and games, September 12 and 13 will be a weekend to remember in Athlone.
A sky-diving team will take to the Athlone skies at 4pm on Sunday before landing in the Shannon at Athlone Marina from where the Athlone RNLI will then bring the divers safely back to shore. With dramatic James Bond theme tunes as backing music, this is an event that promises to be lots of fun as well as entertaining.
The hot air balloon display at 5pm on Saturday is sure to amaze, as a group of hot air balloons take off from Burgess Park and glide across Athlone’s skyline; another theatrical event not to be missed. Colourful dragon boats will take to the river on Sunday in a 200 metre team relay race. All are welcome to come along and support a team on the day.
Timmy Donovan, Athlone River Festival and Food Village chairman, said: “There is still time to get involved. We have a limited number of spaces available for teams who would like to take part in either the water-based races, the tug-of-war or the soap box road race. Don’t miss the chance to get involved in what will be organised chaotic fun and games.”
