Athlone murder trial to start today in Central Criminal Court

The trial of a retired member of the Defence Forces accused of murdering a woman in Athlone four years ago is due to get underway today, Thursday, at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.

Jimmy Devaney (66 ) of Millbrook Avenue, Monksland, Athlone, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Marie Greene (37 ) on February 13, 2011. Ms Greene lived at St Mel’s Park, Athlone. Her body was discovered in bogland on the outskirts of Athlone in February 2011.

Mr Devaney entered a plea of not guilty when he appeared in court on Monday morning (July 13 ). 

Also on that Monday, a jury of six men and six women was sworn in for the trial which was due to start yesterday (Wednesday ).

However, yesterday morning, Ms Justice Margaret Heneghan told the jury she was not in a position to start to trial because there is another trial at hearing.

The judge said Mr Devaney’s trial would start today (Thursday ) and would take about two weeks.
