As part of its contribution to Yeats2015, the year-long celebration of one of Ireland’s most beloved poets, Westmeath County Library is delighted to offer the public a chance to hear award-winning poet Noel Monahan give a talk on WB Yeats and Patrick Kavanagh.
Taking place in the Aidan Heavey Library on Thursday May 7 at 3.30pm, Noel will explore the common ground and the marked contrasts evident in the work of these two great poets. The talk will last approximately 45 minutes, with time allowed for questions and answers and discussion afterwards.
Noel Monahan has published six collections of poetry, the most recent being Where the Wind Sleeps: New and Selected Poems which was published by Salmon Poetry last year. In the autumn of 2014 he did a US tour giving readings in the universities of Minnesota and Iowa.
This talk should appeal to all lovers of Irish poetry because it deals with two of the giants of Irish poetry, Yeats and Kavanagh, both of whom enjoyed a great following.
Noel Monahan is well equipped to deliver this talk which he calls ‘Celtic Mists and Realism’ because he is himself a practising poet. His own work has been translated into French, Italian, Romanian, and Russian. Noel, a native of Granard, is a former secondary school teacher who now lives and writes in County Cavan.
