Gardaí in Athlone are appealing for information on a break-in at Spollen’s supermarket in Glasson in the early hours of Tuesday.
Significant damage was caused to the alarm and security system, while a small amount of cash and cigarettes were taken in the break-in which occurred between 3am and 3.20am.
Entry was gained via a side door. Gardaí believe the intruders left on foot and say that a car may have been parked nearby, to assist in the getaway. Anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area around that time is urged to contact gardaí. An examination of the scene has been carried out, as part of the garda investigation.
Meanwhile gardaí say they are following a definite line of enquiry in relation to a break-in at the parochial house in Tang on Easter Monday. Entry to the house was gained via a back window shortly after 12 noon, but nothing was taken.
Elsewhere, gardaí are advising bicycle owners to be vigilant and not leave their property lying around, amid a number of recent bicycle thefts.
Homes and garages in Coosan and Barrymore were targeted in the past two weeks and gardaí say that high value bicycles are being stolen in each of the incidents.
Gardaí say that in some instances, thieves are targeting two or more bicycles and they are advising people to watch out for unusual vans in rural areas. They say that bicyle owners should take note of the serial numbers and to secure the bicycles in locked sheds.
Anyone with information should contact Athlone Garda Station on (090 ) 6498550.
