The Irish Wheelchair Associaiton held an open day recently in the Clonbrusk Resource and Outreach Centre, Athlone.
The Clonbrusk Resource Centre is a purpose-built facility which was officially opened in 2009, and comprises a day service for adults with physical and sensory disabilities and a range of therapy services for both children and adults with intellectual, physical, and sensory disabilities.
From this centre, the Irish Wheelchair Association supports approximately 50 people from Athlone and the surrounding areas on a weekly basis.
The aim of the centre is to provide opportunities to people with disabilities so that they can lead full, active, integrated, and independent lives in their own community. The range of programmes offered by the service includes arts and crafts, cookery, music and drama, gardening, sports, day trips, and holidays. Increasingly, the service also offers access to community physiotherapy services and educational programmes such as computer skills, FETAC certificate courses, and supported employment programmes.
