Councillors praise local rugby hero Robbie Henshaw

There was high praise for Athlone native Robbie Henshaw at Monday’s March meeting of Athlone Municipal District after his try for Ireland during Sunday’s Six Nations game against England.

Leading the congratulations Fianna Fail’s Aengus O’Rourke said that there was great pride in the Marist College, Coosan, Connacht Rugby, and Robbie’s family. “Yesterday catapulted him to international stardom. It was a huge achievement,” he said.

Cllr O’Rourke suggested a civic reception be held for Robbie adding that he was sure the rugby player would have a long successful career ahead of him.

Sinn Fein’s Paul Hogan agreed that it was a tremendous achievement for Robbie Henshaw to score the winning try. “Everyone across Westmeath is proud of Robbie Henshaw,” he said. Cllr Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran also congratulated his fellow Coosan man. “He’s a great footballer and rugby star. It’s great for Coosan. Every Saturday morning in Buccs you see the kids out training, now they have someone to look up to.”

Director of services Barry Keohe suggested that the council wait until April’s municipal district meeting when the Six Nations tournament would be over before making arrangements for a civic reception.
