Local Fine Gael TD, Gabrielle McFadden, has said that she has been given an assurance by the HSE that the South Westmeath Hospice unit in Athlone is not closing.
It follows concern that the unit was to close permanently, after it remained closed for four weeks and patients were directed to other hospice units.
However the HSE said admissions had been suspended in order to prevent the spread of an influenza virus.
“I have been in communication with the HSE about concerns regarding the hospice and have been assured that this important facility is not facing closure,” said Deputy McFadden.
“South Westmeath Hospice in Athlone is of paramount importance to the town and surrounding areas. The facility was built through the sterling work of the committee and the people of Athlone.
“Whether one person or four people need its services, it must remain open and any person requiring palliative care should not have to wait a number of days to access that care.”
