Cllr John Dolan is calling on the council to develop cycling and pedestrian links off the Dublin to Galway Greenway cycle link. He recommended a feasibility study to see where spurs could be developed to help bring people into local villages and towns.
“When the cycleway is open we have to think about how to use it, not only as an amenity but also for financial benefit,” he said, adding that signage highlighting local amenities should form part of the project.
The council said their priority at present is to complete the main cycleway project, which already includes a number of connections and signage.
“We have had to create new corridors into the route for construction. The critical thing is to build it to the right standard and within budget. A certain amount of signage will be provided as part of the contract regarding safety, amenities, and boards to show people where they are,” said director of services Barry Kehoe.
He expected businesses would work with the council to create additional links at a later date.
