Tickets on sale now for Hairspray

Athlone Musical Society are busy rehearsing for their upcoming production of Hairspray, a big, bright, joyful 1960s, song-and-dance extravaganza.

AMS will present the Broadway musical from February 28-March 7 in the Dean Crowe Theatre. Hairspray, winner of eight Tony Awards, is set in 1960s Baltimore and is based on the film written and directed by John Waters. The production features an original score by Academy Award-nominated Marc Shaiman, with lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

In Hairspray, it’s 1962 - the ‘50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore’s Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion - to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance programme, The Corny Collins Show and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a plus-size trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the programme’s reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her ‘do’? Only in Hairspray!

This year’s production is directed by local man Alfie Kilduff. There is no doubt but that Alfie’s 30 year plus association with the stage and theatre in Athlone will make for a marvellous production of this musical comedy to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages.

The choreographer is Nicole McDonald who has worked extensively throughout Ireland, the UK and the USA as a professional dancer, tutor, and choreographer for both stage and television. The musical director is Gerard Madden from Galway, a musician and teacher of jazz performance. Gerard will be assisted by resident chorus mistress Heather Shine.

Tickets range from €10-€15 and are on sale now from the Dean Crowe Theatre.
