Entitled Lonely Planet this group exhibition features the works of Ester Barrett, Mary Clifford, Frances Crowe, Eileen Ferguson, David Fox, Cathal Gallagher, Jacinta Guinan, Anne Harkin-Petersen, Allyson Keehan, Pauline Keena, Jo Killalea, Frances McGonigle, Noel Molloy, Anne Rigney, Alexey Romanenko, Anna Marie Savage, Leonard Sheil, Lorraine Wall, Chanelle Walshe, and Ian Wieczorek.
Aedín McGinn, assistant manager at Athlone Arts and Tourism Ltd said: “Lonely Planet was drawn from the many public submissions Luan Gallery received throughout 2013 and 2014. It represents an interesting cross-section of mid-career and emerging artists living and working across Ireland today. This exhibition has really strong regional representation featuring artists’ works from Tullamore, Knockcroghery, Roscommon, and indeed Athlone. We are delighted to support artists from the region and also seek to bring work by other artists working nationally to Athlone.”
The exhibition will be officially launched by invited guest speaker Brian Lynch who will be introduced by Deputy Gabrielle McFadden. Mr Lynch is a poet, playwright, screenwriter, art critic, and novelist and was elected to Aosdána, an organisation set up by the Government in 1985 to honour artists who have made an outstanding contribution to Irish culture.
The exhibition features works from Athlone artist; Frances McGonigle and Jacinta Guinan.
Luan Gallery staff welcome individuals and groups to the space and encourage visitors to seek guided tours. Schools are particularly encouraged to attend with groups for free tours to discuss art in the gallery context.
The exhibition runs from January 16 until February 22.
