A group of plucky plungers will brave the icy waters of the river Shannon at The Strand in Athlone this Saturday December 13 at 11am for the annual An Garda Síochana Polar Plunge.
The Polar Plunge promises to be a colourful, fun-filled event, with many taking to the water in fancy dress. All proceeds raised go towards supporting Special Olympics athletes.
The Athlone Polar Plunge is being spearheaded by Athlone-based garda Brian Keane and colleagues Sergeant Andrew Haran, Garda John Teehan, and Garda Aishling Brady - all of whom got freezin’ for a reason at the launch. Members of the Garda Water Unit, whose unit is based in Athlone will also be supporting the event.
Connacht rugby stars including David McSharry, Andrew Browne, and Willie Faloon were on hand to launch this unique chilly charity challenge. David McSharry said signing up to take the plunge is a great way to support some of Ireland’s most inspiring athletes.
“Rugby players are well used to taking ice baths but Special Olympics Polar Plunge at The Strand in Athlone on December 13 is a much more fun way to get freezin’ for a really good reason. I’d encourage everyone to sign up for the event and help support some of Ireland’s most inspiring athletes.”
Garda Brian Keane is hopeful that the people of Athlone will get behind the fun-filled charity event:
“All of the money raised will go towards supporting athletes, ensuring that they continue to get access to sporting opportunities through competitions, leagues, and interclub competitions,” he said.
Those interested in signing up for the Polar Plunge can do so at www.specialolympics.ie/polarplunge Registration costs €15 and plungers are asked to raise a minimum of €50 which goes directly to supporting athletes with intellectual disabilities through sport and competition. Plungers who raise more than €50 will also receive a complimentary ‘Ice Cool’ t-shirt.
‘Plunges’ are also taking place in locations around the country as part of a fundraising drive to support athletes with intellectual disabilities.
