t is hoped that the new and improved Athlone Regional Sports Centre will be ready to be launched in January 2015.
The centre is currently undergoing extensive renovation at a cost of €2.2 million. The works include a three times larger gym and new spinning studio and fitness studio, as well as new changing facilities, creche, meeting room, and improved poolside changing areas.
The centre’s manager Liam Cunningham says the new and improved sports centre is going to be a ‘wow’ facility.
“We are very excited about the project. Fitness is like technology, it changes all the time and there are always new and better ways of training. We want to make sure the gym is progressive, so we can cater for every level whether you are a complete beginner or an elite or international athlete.”
He says the most important thing is that the facility is “affordable, attractive, and accessible to all”.
“Our age profile ranges from babies to people in their late 80s, and you don’t have to be a member to use the gym. We are conscious of offering value to our customers,” said Mr Cunningham.
He says the centre has had over three million visits since it first opened in 2002.
