Judge claims €40k in expenses

Athlone’s District Court judge has claimed expenses in excess of €40,000 in 2012, that’s according to figures released by the Courts Service last week.

Judge Seamus Hughes incurred travel expenses of €8,970.62, subsistence payments of €31,981.44, and €1,265 for ‘judicial attire and incidental expenses’.

The highest claim was €45,222.43 by Judge Gerard Furlong, a District Court judge who substitutes for other judges around the country.

According to Government figures, a District Court judge has a salary of €136,124, while a Circuit Court judge’s is €156,248.
