Councillors motion for fluoride to be removed from water

Two councillors have called for the removal of fluoride from the public water system.

Both councillor Michael O’Brien and Aengus O’Rourke made motions this week that Athlone Municipal District call on the Government to stop treating the public water supply with fluoride.

Speaking at this week’s monthly meeting Cllr O’Brien said that “The addition of fluoride in water is a serious issue. We are charging people for water, but they can’t drink it. It needs to be removed as a matter of urgency.”

Cllr O’Rourke added that people have had fluoride imposed on them for years. “They have been denied the right to say no. We need to stop the mass medicating of the nation.”

The Fianna Fáil councillor added that other towns in the country have already become fluoride free and that Athlone should do the same.

A letter will be sent to Westmeath County Council set out their position regarding flouridation.
