The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, CIPD (Midlands region ) held a very successful breakfast briefing event recently in the Sheraton Hotel Athlone.
The event focused on employment law and featured one of Ireland’s prominent experts, Alastair Purdy, solicitor and Managing Director of Purdy Legal. Alastair has extensive knowledge of the multinational sector having worked there for a number of years both in Ireland and abroad. He is widely recognised as being one of the foremost experts in employment law in Ireland.
The event was opened by Micheál Coughlan, Chairman of the CIPD Midlands region. Micheál thanked the Sheraton Hotel for hosting the event and welcomed all attendees, including CIPD members, business people, and VHI representatives who are sole sponsors of the CIPD Midlands Region.
Alastair Purdy provided a very comprehensive overview on current trends in legislation, including The Protection of Employment Act 2007, The Employment Rights Compliance Bill, The Corporate Manslaughter Bill, and the Agency Worker Directive.
He also provided an update on recent developments in case law which of course has considerable implications for both employers and employees and encompasses a broad variety of issues including mandatory retirement age, working time, fixed term working, and victimisation to name but a few.
The presentation was followed by a comprehensive question and answer session, with many of the attendees taking the opportunity to get feedback and guidance on complex employment legislation questions from the expert.
The meeting was brought to a close by Micheál Coughlan who thanked Alastair for his support and presented him with a gift on behalf of the CIPD Midlands Region Committee. Micheál reminded the audience that the next CIPD Midland event is a breakfast event and will be held on January 27 at 8am.
The event entitled “Update on Future Skills Needs” will be hosted by AIT and will be presented by Anne Heraty, chairperson of the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs and chief executive of Computer Placement (CPL ) Resources plc. The expert group acts as the central national resource on skills and labour supply for the enterprise sector and an overall strategy for enterprise training in Ireland. The National Training Advisory Committee was merged with the expert group in January 2004 and the group’s mandate was expanded to incorporate the responsibilities formerly held by the NTAC.
