Gardaí investigating a shooting incident which occurred in Ballymore last Friday are seeking information on any unusual activity in the area in the run-up to the incident.
Shots were fired from the passenger seat of a grey Hyundai Trajet people carrier outside a pub in the village of Ballymore at around 7.30pm on Friday evening. However the intended targets escaped injury.
There have been no arrests yet in relation to the incident, but Sergeant Michelle Baker of Athlone Garda Station said yesterday that gardaí are following definite lines of enquiry.
Anyone who noticed anything unusual or suspicious, in terms of the movement of people or vehicles, in the Ballymore area between 7 and 8pm last Friday (September 12 ) is asked to contact Gardaí.
The shooting occurred in a busy area of the village, where two pubs, a garage, shop, and fast food restaurant were all open at the time.
The vehicle from which the shots were fired was travelling from the direction of Low Street through High Street. It was later found burnt out on the Ballymahon Road outside Ballymore.
Athlone’s Cllr Aengus O'Rourke, who was driving through the village at the time, witnessed the car being burnt, and a white car driving away from the scene on the Ballymahon Road shortly after the shooting incident.
Gardaí and two units of the Fire Brigade attended the scene of the shooting incident, which was sealed off for a period of time on Friday evening. The burnt-out vehicle was removed by Gardaí for forensic examination.
