Cocktail waitresses shake it up

Following the success of its original run in Galway, the Blue Pig Theatre Company stages Shakers Re-stirred at Roscommon Arts Centre on Saturday January 24. The work of Bouncers writer John Godber in collaboration with Jane Thornton, Shakers Re-stirred again employs an ensemble cast to turn a critical eye on the world of pubs, clubs and nightlife.

This time we are offered a female perspective as burly bouncers are replaced by world weary waitresses. Say hello to Mel, Carol, Nicky, and Adele and watch as they cry, laugh, and fight their way through a show that is every bit as entertaining and incisive as its better-known predecessor.

The story unfolds with a series of incidents during which a multitude of seemingly unconnected characters make their way to Shakers Cocktail Bar, THE ‘place to be seen’ and focal point of the action. The script transforms the minor events that occur in the course of an ordinary night out into a show that combines snappy dialogue and incisive observation in a way which is both hilarious and uncomfortably easy to recognise. By the show’s conclusion the four waitresses emerge as real and very different individuals thrown together in the shared experience of the wine bar.

This revival for the Blue Pig Theatre Company draws the very best from some of Galway’s finest young actors under the direction of Ruth Shortt. Jasmin Finn, Candice Melton, Anna Mullarkey, and Angela Ryan play the four waitresses, and there are a host of supporting characters ranging from plum-voiced culture vultures to testosterone laced rugger buggers.
