There is a serious need for the introduction of CCTV in the Beechpark and Beechpark West areas of Athlone - that’s according to Sinn Fein councillor Paul Hogan.
Speaking at this week’s Athlone Municipal District meeting Cllr Hogan motioned that the local authority collaborate with the relevant authorities to explore the possibility of extending the CCTV network to the area between the Ballymahon Road and the Old Coosan Road.
“The provision of CCTV in the Beechpark area will prevent burglaries, it will act as a deterrent,” said Cllr Hogan.
The council advised that the matter was for the Department of Justice and can be raised with the Gardaí at the next joint policing meeting on anti social behaviour, which is due to take place later this month.
Fine Gael councillor John Dolan agreed that CCTV was the “only practical solution. The Gardaí can’t be everywhere,” he added.
