Heraldry: Coats of Arms Uncovered travelling exhibition is on show until Monday August 4 at Athlone Castle.
On loan from the National Library of Ireland, the exhibition introduces the art of heraldry and explores the themes of identity and citizenship. Visitors will have a chance to try their hand at cracking the Knight’s Code and designing their own coat of arms. They will also be encouraged to compare the knight’s code to their own school rules.
Even more medieval fun can be expected at the weekend when the Society for Creative Anachronism will be demonstrating their fencing and dancing skills during Medieval Fair on Saturday July 12 and Sunday July 13 from 12-5pm.
Joanna Grobosz, guide at Athlone Castle said: “Last year’s medieval fair was a great success and proved to be the activity of choice that weekend among families in Athlone. We are really looking forward to work with Society for Creative Anachronism again this summer and see what will they bring this year! We would also encourage everyone to take part in the competition for best dressed lady or lord and get their creative hats on now to plan their outfits ahead.”
Visitors will have an opportunity to sample some food prepared to the original medieval recipes and try on hats, crowns, and armour. There will be prizes on both days for best dressed lords and ladies so come along and storm the castle in your best medieval dress.
Face painting will be available as well (included in admission ).
Admission rates are: Family €20, couples €12, single €6, and child €3. This will permit admission to the medieval fair and Athlone Castle visitor centre for one day.
Children under 15 years must be accompanied by an adult.
