Yesterday, Thursday June 26, Gardaí in Athlone were continuing their appeal for witnesses to come forward after the body of Patryk Krupa (23 ) was found partially submerged in the Shannon last Friday night, June 20.
Gardaí launched an investigation on Saturday, June 21. Four men were arrested over the weekend in relation to the investigation, three of whom were released without being charged. Files have been sent to the DPP.
A post mortem was carried out by State pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy in University Hospital Galway over the weekend; however no results have been released.
On Sunday June 22 a man appeared before a special sitting of Athlone District Court charged with assault causing harm and with falsely imprisoning Patryk Krupa on June 20, 2014 at Bogganfin, Athlone, Co Roscommon.
Leszek Sychulec (32 ), 14 Drinan, Ballymahon, Co Longford was also charged with a threat to kill or cause harm to Ewa Krasinska at Athlone Garda Station, Street Barrack on June 21.
Speaking at the special sitting, Garda Aidan Lyons told the court that he arrested Sychulec at Athlone Garda Station at 11.50am and cautioned him after each of the three charges.
No bail application was made and solicitor for the defendant, Owen Carty consented to his client being remanded in custody to Cloverhill to appear before Cloverhill District Court today, June 27.
Judge Hughes deferred legal aid pending details of the defendant’s financial status.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious on Lough Ree or the Shannon near the Bogganfin area of the town on June 20 to come forward.
They are also renewing their appeal for witnesses who may have seen a dark BMW in the vicinity of The Strand/Lloyds Lane area of Athlone on Friday evening June 20 between 6pm and 8pm, or any activity in the Bogganfin area (this is the are a below where the M6 crosses the river Shannon ) between 6 and 8pm - it is a popular walkway.
