‘Athlone - Our Home’ project launched for Athlone Castle Visitor Centre

Athlone Castle Visitor Centre is planning a temporary exhibition in the Lower Keep for National Heritage Week and asks the people of Athlone to get involved.

They are inviting members of the public to tell the story of Athlone through objects.

Do you have a very ordinary object that has an extraordinary story relating to Athlone? Athlone Castle would like you to tell in your own words what makes this item special to you or to a member of your family. This information is as important as the object itself.

From entries received a panel of curators will select ten objects/stories that represent Athlone as seen through the eyes of its people. These items and the accompanying stories will then be exhibited in Athlone Castle Visitor Centre as part of the Heritage Week celebration, which runs from August 23-31.

Joanna Grobosz of Athlone Castle says, “Sometimes the simplest object can tell a great story and it’s those stories that we seek. The permanent display at Athlone Castle is told by historians, but since the reopening of the facility we have had many visitors sharing personal memories of life in Athlone with us - that’s where the idea for this project began. A temporary exhibition will hopefully reveal a more personal image of the town.’

Details on how to submit your object and accompanying story can be found at www.athlonecastle.ie
