McFadden welcomes funding for Longford and Westmeath roads

Fine Gael by-election candidate for the Longford-Westmeath constituency, Gabrielle McFadden, has welcomed significant additional funding for roads in Longford and Westmeath.

“I welcome this extra funding from the Department of Transport which will go towards the improvement and upkeep of roads in both counties,” she said.

Under the Community Involvement Scheme, which is devised to enable local authorities to improve stretches of road with the help of the local community, Westmeath County Council will receive an extra €322,540 while Longford County Council will be allocated a further €207,706.

“In addition, €12m is being provided to local authorities under the Restoration Improvement grant heading. These are funds which are provided to county councils for the rehabilitation and maintenance of road pavements,” she said.

Under this scheme, Westmeath will receive €252,411 and Longford will benefit from an allocation of €181,455.

“Improving and maintaining road and pavement infrastructure means improving the lives of communities as they go about their daily business, so I am delighted to see that Westmeath and Longford have been allocated this substantial funding,” added Cllr McFadden.
