The graphic design course in Athlone IT is extremely highly regarded within the design profession nationally and for the first time in its 40 year history an exhibition of student graphic design work is to be hosted beyond the usual gallery space. This high profile exhibition will be on show in the windows of one of Ireland’s longest established department store.
Burgess Department Store, Church Street approached AIT with a view to using their central location and famous frontage to make the creative work of the students accessible to everyone.
The exhibition entitled Facade is the work of graduating design students of the BA (Hons ) in Visual Communications at AIT. The work on display is that of selected students from the course and is their individual responses to a single project brief, also entitled Facade, which challenged the students to consider the phenomenon of ‘psycho-geography’. Here is an excerpt of the brief to which the students responded: “Sites, places, locations: everyone has a place of origin, a focus from where all things begin. Spaces where we interact live and thrive. What role does this space play in determining our sense of self and how does one negotiate a sense of identity in an unfamiliar environment?”
The works range from large format interpretative pieces through to smaller postcards and will be on public display in the windows of Burgess Department Store for a limited period.
