Commemoration for late Colm Murray proposed for Moate Library

A commemorative wall in memory of the late Colm Murray has been proposed for Moate Library.

Speaking at this week’s Athlone Area meeting, Cllr Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran suggested a fitting tribute to the Moate native and former RTÉ sports commentator.

“Colm Murray was an ambassador for Moate and Westmeath. His documentary on Motor Neurone Disease created a huge awareness of the illness. This commemorative wall would be an ideal opportunity to mark his memory,” explained Cllr Moran.

Cllr Frankie Keena agreed that the commemoration would be fitting, especially as the people of Moate are trying to revitalise the town.

“Colm loved Moate, he came back whenever he could. He was a great guy and I thoroughly support this motion,” added Cllr Tom Allen.

“No more an entertaining man will you ever listen to,” added Cllr John Dolan. “He was a huge loss to the country never mind the town.”

Cllr Moran suggested a wall with video footage and audio clips would be appropriate. He has already spoken to RTÉ about getting pieces from Mr Murray’s sports broadcasts.
