A programme looking at the first forced emigration scheme on the Mahon Estate in Strokestown, County Roscommon during the Great Irish Famine, is to broadcast on Shannonside Northern Sound.
Mary Mullins is hosting The Missing 1490; Strokestown’s Famine Emigrants this bank holiday Monday from 10am.
It will look at the first forced emigration scheme on the Mahon Estate during the famine in 1847; 1,490 tenants were walked by the bailiff to the famine ships in Dublin, never to return again.
Half perished either on the journey or soon after arriving in Canada. However many others went on to lead successful lives in Canada and the United States, including Michael Calahoon Duffassy who was named as one of the most notable people in California in 1904, and Thomas McNamara and Patrick Fallon who were instrumental in building the Blue Ridge Mountain tunnel, the engineering feat of the 19th century.
These people form the basis of research by Dr Ciarán Reilly from the Centre for the Study of Historic Irish Houses and Estates at NUI Maynooth; and he joins Mary Mullins for this special programme on Shannonside Northern Sound this bank holiday Monday from 10am.
