A public meeting to discuss possible tourism and other uses for the RTÉ Athlone Transmitter site at Moydrum will take place on Wednesday April 9 at 8pm in the Sheraton Athlone Hotel. The meeting is being convened by the Athlone Marconi Centre Heritage Group.
The Marconi Transmitter at Moydrum first came into use in 1932 when Irish broadcasting was in its infancy and still survives in its original location. It is possibly the oldest surviving transmitter of its type in the world.
The meeting is being called as part of a feasibility study looking at potential visitor, educational, and recreational uses for the site. The feasibility study, with support from the Westmeath Community Development Limited through the Rural Development (LEADER ) Programme and also from Athlone Town Council, is being conducted by TTC - Tourism & Transport Consult International.
