St Patrick’s weekend at Athlone Castle and Luan Gallery

Celebrate your Irishness and explore your local history this St Patrick’s weekend. Discover the colourful history of Athlone town told in a variety of interactive and engaging ways at Athlone Castle Visitor Centre. For St Patrick’s weekend March 15-17 u15s will be free of charge and all other admissions are only €4.

Throughout the eight new renovated spaces there is something for all interests and ages as you take yourself through on a self-guided tour. There are a number of hands-on activities and screens to interact with. You will have a chance to test your strength at some medieval weapons and practise leadership skills in a ‘capture the castle’ interactive game.

Learn about the famous siege of Athlone through a cinematic experience where the re-enactments, cannon fire, and gun fire will make you feel like you are right back in 1691! There are numerous artifacts also on display throughout the castle which highlight the social history of the town as well as exploring religion, education and self-sufficiency in the town.

There is a café in the castle and picnic areas outside where you are welcome to relax after your tour. Athlone Castle Visitor Centre has something for all the family so come along and explore, engage, enjoy.

After your visit why not take a few minutes to explore the Luan Gallery just across the road. Saturday March 15 and Sunday March 16 will be the last opportunity to see DE_Cline by Paul Quast and Soul Space by Dympna Bonfield. There is no charge to visit the gallery. The Luan Gallery will close from March 17-20 to facilitate the installation of three new exhibitions by Tim Mann, Tom Fitzgerald, and Tom Climent.
