Eight years of Cathaoirleach awards - celebrating people in the community

The Cathaoirleach Awards allow Westmeath County Council to publicly and formally show appreciation to local and community groups for their contribution to society and demonstrates that their efforts have not gone unnoticed.

The Cathaoirleach Awards will take place on Friday April 25 from 5pm in Belvedere House Gardens and Park. The event includes a range of awards for community groups and individuals. The cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, Peter Burke will also present certificates of recognition to Westmeath People of the Year and the honoured 2014 Person of the Year.

“The annual Cathaoirleach Awards ceremony captures the diverse nature of the activities undertaken at ground level in the area of community and voluntary activity in Westmeath. The allocation of €150,000 by the members in the 2014 budget will facilitate the continuation of this very positive celebration of community participation in the county,” explained Cllr Burke.

“Community and voluntary activity is vital to sustaining an ethos of active citizenship in our county. The Cathaoirleach Awards go some way to recognising the involvement and ongoing work of groups and individuals in their communities and how this work can influence others to become involved and active in their communities,” added Cllr Colm Arthur, chairperson of the Community Development and Economic Development Strategic Policy Committee.

Special awards will also be made to those who will represent the county in the Pride of Place 2014 competition, where Westmeath has enjoyed success over the past three consecutive years.
