The date for this year’s Local and European elections was confirmed this week by Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan as Friday May 23.
Polling stations across the country will be open from 7am-10pm.
This is a unique opportunity for citizens to vote for councillors of the new municipal council which will see Westmeath lose its Athlone and Mullingar councils as part of Fine Gael’s Local Government reform.
In total 20 councillors will sit in the new Westmeath county council which has been divided into three electorial areas - Athlone (seven councillors ), Mullingar-Kilbeggan (seven councillors ), and Mullingar-Coole (six councillors ).
A new register of electors will be published on February 1 and will come into force on February 15. Those eligible to vote should check this register on the Westmeath County Council website. If you are not registered to vote you can apply to be included on the supplementary register of electors. Application forms for this must be received by the registration authority no later than April 26.
