Hopeful signs for Athlone Town FC

Athlone Town FC is heartened with the public response to its recent appeal, both for financial help and for volunteers to help with running the club.

Official sources from Athlone Town FC have advised they received commitments from in excess of 100 patrons in the three days since the public meeting and are very hopeful the target of 400 will be reached in for the deadline of January 5 2009. In addition many people have come forward with proposals for assistance in running the club and been involved in fundraising initiatives .

Handing over his contribution, Mayor of Athlone, Cllr Egbert Moran, recounted the many happy days supporting the ‘Bit o’ Blue’.

“My family, and indeed the Moran name, is long associated with sport in Athlone and under no circumstances can I officiate as mayor and see the demise of this bastion of tradition in Athlone. I call on all Athlone citizens to help out and maintain the status of Athlone Town FC in League of Ireland football. While the club is a long way from the glory days, I see no reason it cannot once more be at the forefront of League of Ireland Football. This is a great opportunity to re-build and revitalise.”
