The Simon Shop: ethical shopping and excellent bargains

Christmas can be a difficult time of year for many, but it is especially difficult for those experiencing homelessness, when issues such as loneliness, isolation, and poverty become even more challenging. Knowing there is support available can make all the difference.

Midlands Simon Community provides essential ongoing support and care to those affected by homelessness in Westmeath and across the Midlands region. Since 2005 Midlands Simon has now supported over 500 people, including over 150 children. 2008 saw a significant increase in the numbers of people requiring the assistance of Midlands Simon, with 98 new cases being referred to the service, representing over 160 people.

Given the current economic climate Midlands Simon is even more dependent on the support of the wider community to survive. A way to show solidarity with the homeless this Christmas, and throughout the year, is to choose to do your shopping in the Simon Shop. There is a fantastic selection of top quality gifts to choose from, for everyone in the family. You can get everything from clothes and accessories to DVDs, books, and video games. It is also a very welcome opportunity to find excellent value for money, and at the same time show that ethical shopping and excellent quality can go hand in hand. Some of the bargains have to be seen to be believed!

According to Tony O’Riordan, CEO Midlands Simon Community, “People who choose to support Midlands Simon this Christmas, either through our Christmas cards, the shop, by donating directly, or any other way, will be assisting some of the most vulnerable and marginalised in our community but also getting excellent value for money, and this is surely good for everyone”.

The Midlands Simon Community is also appealing to people to consider donating any unwanted Christmas gifts that are received to the Simon Shop in Athlone. Sometimes we all receive a gift that we already have, or receive something we don’t really need; the Simon Shop is entirely dependent on the generosity and kindness of the community for all the items for sale in the shop and would be very grateful for all donations.
