The Lions Club and Tesco stores across the county have collected over 1,940 worth of meals as part of the Tesco Christmas Food Appeal.
The appeal was one of the biggest of its kind in Westmeath this year, with all food collected being distributed locally. Tesco topped up the local Westmeath donations by 30 per cent.
Joe Ryall, store manager Tesco Golden Island, Athlone, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity, goodwill, and charitable spirit shown by the people of Westmeath, not to mention the huge efforts made by all the Tesco staff and Lions Club volunteers involved in making this appeal the success it has been. My sincerest thanks to everyone for their support.”
Liam Lyons, district governor of Lions Clubs in Ireland described the public response as most generous in extremely difficult times. “We have always enjoyed the support of shoppers at this time of the year and we are delighted that our joint project with Tesco proved to be such an outstanding success.”
He also thanked the thousands of Lions and other volunteers who participated in the food appeal.
“Every grocery item and every cent we collect will go to people in need this Christmas,” he said.
