Ethical gifts to the value of €13,615 were purchased by people in Westmeath from Trocaire last Christmas.
The overseas aid agency revealed the figure as it launched its gift range for Christmas 2013, and appealed to the people of Westmeath to once again support their ethical gift campaign.
Executive director of Trocaire, Eamonn Meehan, thanked the people of Westmeath for their “exceptional generosity during the Christmas season in supporting the world’s poorest people”.
“Last Christmas, people from County Westmeath continued their long tradition of compassion towards people facing poverty. Because of this, we were able to provide families in countries such as Malawi and Somalia with gifts from Ireland, vital lifelines such as chickens, goats, healthcare, and education,” said Mr Meehan.
