Still no freedom for burglary suspects

Two youths, believed by the authorities to be responsible for a major spate of house breaks around Athlone, will have to spend at least another week in custody after a formal Garda application opposing bail was upheld.

Attending the District Court on Tuesday (December 16 ) from their place of detention were James Fallon (19 ), Castlesampson, Taughmaconnell and Kevin Hourigan, (19 ), from Columbus Terrace, Athlone who had both sought bail after a two week period on remand in St Patrick’s Institute.

Fallon, with a medical appointment pending, and promising to live under conditions at his mother’s address in Ballinasloe, had made the application through his solicitor Hugh Campbell.

However, after evidence was given from Detective Garda Tom Higgins, Judge David Anderson refused his application and ordered him back in detention for another week, to appear in the Cloverhill courthouse on December 23.

On hearing this outcome, Hourigan consulted with his solicitor, Mr Paul Connellan, and withdrew his application, instead consenting to a further remand in custody until the same date.
