Have your say on the Constitution at local event

If you would like to have your voice heard on the future of the Irish Constitution, a public meeting is being held in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Athlone next Wednesday November 20 at 7.30pm.

The event offers members of the public the opportunity to share their views on the areas of the Constitution they would like to see amended or changed.

The Convention on the Constitution was established in 2012 to discuss proposed amendments to the Irish Constitution and is mandated to consider a total of eight topics of constitutional relevance. This meeting in Athlone will help decide what issues should be looked at next by the Convention.

Commenting on the meeting in Athlone, chair of the Convention, Tom Arnold, said: “I am delighted that we will be giving people living in the Midlands the opportunity to have their voices heard. The Convention has been promoting participative democracy in Ireland since it was established last year. We have held regular meetings across the country and have heard many different opinions on issues of huge constitutional importance. It is important that the voices of citizens in all areas of Ireland are heard and this is the primary aim of the Convention.

“I would urge all members of the public in the Midlands and the surrounding counties to come to the meeting in the Radisson Blu Hotel Athlone on Wednesday November 20 to share their views on constitutional change. The Constitution is the document of the people; only they can change it and this is the opportunity for the public to express themselves.”
