Nurses and midwives to be consulted at AIT meeting

Nurses and midwives from across the Midlands are being invited to attend a meeting in Athlone, where they will be consulted on a new code of conduct.

The local session will take place in Athlone Institute of Technology on Friday November 15 from 2-4pm.

Nurses, midwives, students, and members of the public are invited to attend the event to discuss the new draft ‘Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives’ from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.

Similar sessions will take place across the country to discuss this draft code which nurses and midwives are required to adhere to in their day-to-day practice. The code helps them to understand their responsibilities in caring for service users in a safe, ethical, and effective way.

The sessions will be led by representatives from the Nursing and Midwifery Board. The draft code was launched during the inaugural Nurses Week at the start of October and is designed to support ethical and clinical decision-making, ongoing reflection, and professional self-development. The document also informs the general public about the professional care they can expect from nurses and midwives.

A recent study by Amárach Research showed that nurses and midwives are considered the most ethical, trustworthy, and compassionate when compared to other professions, and are ranked ‘high’ or ‘very high’ for honesty and ethics by 79 per cent of the general public.

CEO of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, Dr Maura Pidgeon, commented: “A new code is one of the most important steps for a profession, creating a framework of standards for the regulation, monitoring, and enforcement of professional conduct. An updated code will ensure that our guidance to the professions of nursing and midwifery is current, relevant, and clear to all including the public. I would encourage everyone in Westmeath and the Midlands to look at this updated draft code, especially nurses, midwives, and members of the general public and to come along to this free information session.”
