Westmeath consumers encouraged to ‘buy local, buy Irish’ this Christmas

Thousands of Westmeath’s consumers are making last minute preparations for their Christmas shopping. With this in mind, Agri Aware has launched a consumer campaign encouraging the public to source local Irish produce and support over 250,000 people employed in the agri-food industry.

The campaign emphasises that farmers are working relentlessly during the festive season to secure a safe supply of Irish produce for families in Westmeath.

Agri Aware chairman, Mairead Lavery commented “I would encourage the public to buy Irish this Christmas and show support for people who are working hard to ensure the food our families enjoy is safe. The support of consumers has never been timelier with recent industry and economic turbulence.”

The chairman also stated, “Irish farmers are internationally renowned as producers of exceptionally high quality food. We are fortunate enough to have this produce readily available on our doorsteps and will continue to do so with the backing of Irish consumers. ”

Shopping local is another key message of the initiative and the economical benefits of supporting local producers and outlets.

Ms Lavery said “There are many benefits to shopping locally including the sustenance of thousands of jobs and rural businesses. Not only is buying local more convenient, it retains money in the community which helps to support family and friends. I thank consumers for buying local, buying Irish this Christmas.”
