Galway rugby players will be stopping overnight in Athlone on Saturday December 20 as part of their 225km cycle.
Players of Bective Rangers Rugby Club are taking on a charity coast to coast starting from Salthill on Saturday December 20 at 7am.
The purpose of the cycle is to raise funds and profile for the Stuart Mangan Appeal. Stuart, who is a cousin of club member Eamonn Sayers, was playing in a club rugby game in April of this year when a simple tackle left the 24-year-old with a devastating spinal injury.
“The players and members of Bective are aware of their good fortune and health, and this season have explored many avenues to fund raise for this appeal with great commitment,” says cycle organiser Paul Hatton.
“We are not trained cyclists. We will be using normal mountain/road bikes, and we will not have any special training. We are simply doing this to raise money for Stuart. “Hatton, who has been club captain four times in recent years, will take part in the cycle, along with four players from Bective’s 1st XV squad, Damien Hall, Dan Crean, Mark Hennelly, and Richard Maybury, and also Mark Crean.
The cycle departs Salthill at 7am and will stop overnight in Athlone before leaving the following day at 7am.
