Plunkett’s and Castletown set up novel county final

The county senior hurling final which is fixed for October 13 is set to be one of the most eagerly awaited in years thanks in no small part to St Oliver Plunkett’s shock win over hot favourites Clonkill last weekend.

The reigning champions were bidding to contest their seventh final on the trot but were knocked for six by a stubborn Oliver Plunkett’s side who refused to read the script.

The Mullingar side held out for a 1-9 to 1-8 win to book their first ever senior county final ticket. Castletown Geoghegan impressed in their 1-19 to 2-9 win over Lough Lene Gaels and having lost the 2011 decider to Clonkill by two points they will see this as a great opportunity to win their first title since 2004.

Just as the inter-county season became more interesting when Kilkenny and Tipperary exited the championship, having a county final without Clonkill or Raharney involved is sure to capture the imagination of the wider hurling folk on the county. Castletown are sure to be warm favourites to lift the silverware but after last weekend it would be foolish to dismiss Plunkett’s lightly.
