Town shocked by river bridge fall

Athlone was in shock this week after the tragic death of a local man after falling from the town bridge into the Shannon.

Tommy Revins, who was in his early 50s and living on the Ballymahon Road, died after falling into the Shannon. It is believed that Mr Revins had been walking on the top of the wall of the bridge around 11.30pm on Saturday night, September 7. Gardaí were alerted and the local RNLI crew along with members of the Athlone Sub Aqua club attended the scene. A search of the river was carried out and the body of Mr Revins was taken from the water within an hour of the incident.

His remains were removed to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar for a post mortem examination which was carried out on Monday.

Mr Revins was laid to rest on Wednesday.
