Mayo 5-11
Westmeath 0-11
Westmeath ladies bowed out of this year’s TG4 All-Ireland senior championship following a heavy defeat at the hands of a slicker and more experienced Mayo side in Longford last Saturday.
Not for the first time in her career Cora Staunton was the outstanding player on view as the former AIT student helped herself to a staggering 4-8.
Westmeath’s hopes of causing an upset were dealt an early hammer-blow as Mayo helped themselves to three early goals. Just as their male counterparts did against Donegal, the green and red ladies showed no mercy as they piled on the scores.
To their credit, Martin Flanagan’s side, despite having goalkeeper Niamh Mulligan sin-binned, never threw in the towel and managed to score five of the last six scores. It was too little too late however as Mayo march on and Westmeath can look back on a year where the win over Donegal was undoubtedly the highlight.
