Two locals will do their bit for Heritage Week by leading a guided tour of the historic Hill of Uisneach this weekend.
The two Mullingar men, Justin Moffitt - former manager of The Blizzards - and Marty Mulligan - promoter of The Spoken Word at Electric Picnic - will guide all interested parties through the hill’s 4,000 years of history from the Neolithic age to the present day.
The two-hour tour will leave the car park from 1pm tomorrow (August 17 ), and if successful the two men hope to reprise the tour each Saturday until the end of September.
“We will bring them through the Iron Age, the Bronze Age, the arrival of St Patrick, the division of the dioceses, and up to Daniel O’Connell and De Valera who held speeches at the Catstone,” said Marty Mulligan.
The family-friendly tour will focus on four sites of interest on the hill - the royal palace, Lough Lúgh, St Patrick’s Bed, and the Catstone.
“It’s a journey through time - the ages of Uisneach - on this most sacred of sites that pre-dates Tara,” he added.
All are welcome, but are advised to wear weather-appropriate clothes.
Groups are asked to ring ahead to give numbers, and should call Marty Mulligan on (086 ) 7250776 to do so.
“We wish to thank the generosity of landowners David and Angela Clarke for allowing us to do this,” he concluded.
