Gardaí confirm break-in at Regional Sports Centre

Retreat area also targeted for house burglaries

The Athlone Regional Sports Centre was targeted in a break-in attempt on Wednesday night, August 14, one of a number of break-ins which occurred in the town this week.

The sports centre, of which Athlone Town Council is the sole shareholder, was the subject of an attempted robbery in the early hours of Thursday morning, between 1 and 2am.

The perpetrators gained entry to the premises by forcing the front door; however the centre’s alarm was activated and local gardaí arrived to the scene shortly after.

No property was stolen, and no one had been arrested at the time of going to press.

Gardaí are now appealing to members of the public for information on the incident. Anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area, or who has any information which may help the investigation, is asked to contact Athlone Garda Station at (090 ) 6492600.

Within a short timeframe on the same night, Wednesday, a house in the Retreat area was also targeted by thieves.

The house was broken into, also by forcing the front door, and two laptops were stolen. Gardaí are not ruling out a connection between the two incidents, which occurred within close proximity of each other.

The incidents follow another house burglary which took place in the the Retreat area earlier this week.

Overnight on Monday night, August 12, entry was gained to the premises between the hours of 12.20-7am. A laptop, iPad, keys to a car, and the householder’s car were stolen.

The vehicle, a silver Toyota Avensis, has not yet been recovered. Members of the public are being asked to keep an eye out for the vehicle, which may have been abandoned.

Anyone who can help the Gardaí with their investigation into any of these incidents is asked to contact Athlone Garda Station at (090 ) 6492600.
