ESB Networks will start work next week on the final stage of a €600,000 investment programme to upgrade the electricity infrastructure in the Moate and Mount Temple areas of County Westmeath.
The planned works will involve upgrades and improvements to over 114km of overhead medium voltage lines stretching from Moate westwards towards the outskirts of Athlone, including the Mount Temple area. The medium voltage network feeding Moate town will also be upgraded as part of the project.
Up to 40 highly skilled network technicians from Athlone, Loughrea, Ballinasloe, Mullingar, and Tullamore will be deployed on the works which will take place over eight days between August 12-22.
The improvement works will involve some disruption to customer electricity supplies during the period. All customers will notified in advance of the times and dates of the planned interruptions.
Over the past decade, ESB Networks has invested over €6 billion in upgrading Ireland’s electricity network. This has significantly improved network reliability and efficiency, with the average customer now experiencing less than three hours of lost power annually, a 70 per cent reduction on pre-investment levels. This supports both local communities and the national drive for inward investment in industry and jobs.

In a recent study of global utilities by IBM, Ireland was ranked as having the third most advanced smart network in the world in terms of servicing customer needs today and anticipating future needs.
